괴테는 뉴턴을 날카롭게 비판한다.

다른 비판이 여기서 가장 유관한 것은 두 가지 비판이다.

첫 번째는 뉴턴의 이론이 설명해야 하는 모든 현상을 설명하는 데에 실패하며, 뉴턴이 환경에 대한 변수의 충분한 범위 안에서 현상을 찾는 데 실패했기 때문에 이는 놀랍지 않다는 점이다. 

두 번째는 뉴턴이 그의 실험을 통해 한 추론은 타당하지 않았다는 점이다; 결정적 실험(experimentum crucis)이 적절한 예이다.
