무슨 새가 짹짹거려서 고개를 들어 보니, 전기줄 위에 제비 두 마리가 앉아있었다. 집에서 제비를 보는 것이 몇 년 만인가? 20년 만인 것 같다. 20년 전에 집을 고친 뒤부터는 집에서 제비가 찾아오지 않았다.
털이 매끈하지 않고 새끼들에게나 있는 솜털이 남아 있는 것을 보니, 올해 태어난 새끼 제비인 것 같았다. 어미로 추정되는 제비가 연신 먹이를 물어와서 새끼 제비들에게 입에 넣었다. 남쪽으로 갈 준비를 하는 모양이다.
요새 동네에서도 제비를 보았다는 집이 없는데 어디에 둥지를 틀었는지 모르겠다. 내년에는 우리집에 둥지를 트려나.
